Attic Fan Installation
They are much more effective than vents in this area when it comes to lowering internal temperatures in the home when things heat up. During hot summers, temperatures in an attic can be in excess of 150 degrees. Vents offer passive solutions while fans will actually create the positive airflow in the area that is needed to keep temperatures in the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, and other vital living spaces much lower.
Many homeowners also fail to take into consideration that attic fans can actually extend the life of your roof. When moisture rises in your home, it stops in your attic, soaking into beams and other structures that are vital to the roofing. As the moisture sits in this area, mold can develop, the wood weakens, and insulation is slowly broken down. An attic fan moves the moisture away from the attic space and back into the external environment before it has time to set in and do any damage.
Air conditioning expenses are also dramatically reduced with the use of an attic fan. It has been shown that an attic fan can reduce the temperature in the home by up to ten degrees alone, translating into savings in energy of up to 30 percent where air conditioning is concerned. Your air conditioner will not have to work as hard or for as long, allowing you to extend its overall lifespan as well.
Installing attic fans is a very basic process that virtually any homeowner can take on with the right tools and a little bit of knowledge. Begin by selecting a fan that cools either through the gables or directly through the roof. You should also consider the square footage of your attic, and purchase a fan with the appropriate power. When doing a roof mount, begin by drilling a starter hole in the roof followed by another hole that matches the fan diameter. Slide the fan under the shingles and above the second hole. Roofing mastic should be used to seal the fan. Once the corners are nailed down, apply roofing tar to all the seals. Gable mounts are also popular and simple as well. They are the most appropriate for older homes. Purchase a fan with mounting brackets so that all you need to do attach it to the structure using the studs.
